Homeschool Room Over the Years

Four years ago, when we decided to homeschool, I poured my heart into creating our very first homeschool space.

I was so proud of it, we had first day of school signs, and all the things I thought we needed. I was wrong!

We had our little shelves organized, supplies ready to go, books picked out, and all the excitement that comes with starting something completely new.

At the time, I thought I had it figured out. Homeschool should look just like public school, but at home.

I quickly learned that homeschooling has a funny way of teaching you what actually matters.

Over the last four years, our homeschool space has changed more times than I can count.

Space #1: The Beginning

This was our very first homeschool setup.

Looking back now, I laugh because I thought this little space was so perfect.

The reality?

Homeschooling isn’t about having the perfect room.

It’s about creating an environment where learning feels safe, curious, and enjoyable.

Space #2: The Basement Phase

At one point, we moved our homeschool into the basement. Our tiny little den was not enough space when there was more children added to the mix.

But it didn’t work for us.

For so many reasons.

It felt disconnected from the heart of our home. We weren’t using it. Something just felt off.

One thing homeschooling has taught me is that it’s okay to pivot.

If something isn’t working, change it.

Space #3: The Bonus Room

Now our homeschool space lives in our bonus room.

Convincing my husband to give up our only TV room wasn’t exactly an easy sell 😂 but it ended up being one of the best decisions for our family.

This space feels like us.

It’s bright.

It’s lived in.

It holds books we love, projects we’re working on, and evidence of learning happening every day.

More importantly, it works for our family.

What I’ve Learned After Four Years

I’ve learned:

• Learning happens everywhere.

• The space will evolve as your family evolves.

• Function matters more than aesthetics.

• Some of the best homeschool moments happen nowhere near the homeschool table.

Four years later, this room is my favourite space in our house.

Not because it’s perfect.

But because of everything that has happened inside it.
